Day 24 - Kalnapilis Original



Today Beer Heads the Beer Odyssey brings us to the country of Lithuania where this country's motto is; "At least we're not Latvia." For those who may be wondering where exactly they might find this country on a map, it's located north of Poland and West of Russia. Ironically, this Kalnapilis Original is not that original. Which is sort-of a relief because I didn't know what kind of taste to expect from Lithuania. For all I knew, it could have tasted like gruel. I couldn't smell or taste anything special, and neither could Iron Chef. It just taste like plain old beer. The only thing interesting to write about it is that Iron Chef thought it was champagne-y. I think it's a solid 5 on the beer scale.

Day 23 - Okocim Polish Porter

Hey Beer Heads! Do you know what it says on the bottom of a Polish beer bottle? It says, "Open other end." Ha Ha Ha. But seriously, Okocim polish porter is pretty good stuff. It's got a little fruit in the smell and taste. Iron Chef says it has a molasses-y and somewhat sweet taste. It is a heavy beer that is very filling. I like it, Iron Chef doesn't. I am gonna consider the fact that it's smooth and rate it a 6 on the beer scale.

100 Beers in 100 Days-Going for Gold

Day 22 - krusovice

Today Beer Heads we find ourselves at the krusovice Royal Brewery drinking beer that's Czech, not cache. I mean it's from the Czech Republic. That's where the odyssey brings us today. This beer is both very new to America, and very obscure in the world of beer which means I can't find anything online about to report to you in this post. All I know is that the label says that it won the gold medal in Prague in 1891.

it doesn't say in which Olympic event that was, but I am guessing it could have been the Javelin Throw.

I tried to write more about the flavor last night, but the blogger people can't tell time, and took their site down before 4pm PDT and I ended up losing that part and I don't feel like re-doing it. The only thing I remember anyways is that Iron Chef thought she detected a faint smell of baby formula?!? I think we rated it a 3.5 on the beer scale.

Day 21 - Bitburger



Here we are at our last stop on the German leg of the Beer Odyssey. A city nestled in the Eifel mountains called Bitburg. The city is home to a NATO Base, 2 Air Force Bases, and a whole lot of soldiers that love them some Bitburger. And they have shown it by making it the most popular beer in Germany. So of course, I gotta try it to see if it's "all that".

The bottle of Bitburger had been sitting in my fridge for more than a week because I really didn't want to try this one that much. I figured it would just be the 'Germany Stationed Serviceman's' substitute for Budweiser, but then I had to completely change my thoughts after actually drinking it. Don't get me wrong, I am not calling this a 10, I am just saying it's better than Budweiser. I think I've had an epiphany after drinking beer from Germany. American Lagers are only an insipid attempt to mimic those of Germany. It's pretty clear that Bitburger was the inspiration for Budweiser. A relatively fast and cheap beer with a widely liked taste appeals to many people at once. And the Budweiser people tried to copy that.

When it came time to taste the Bitburger, I decided to have my brother Dan take a quick taste of it and provide some of his usual colorful commentary on it in order to make this review more interesting. Unfortunately, Bitburger is just too run-of-the-mill for any special comment. My Brother said what I and Iron Chef would have said, It's clean, crisp, drinkable and good for everyday consumption, but that's about it. I will rate it a 5.

Beer Odyssey 20th Beer Update

Well Beer Heads, we are 1/5th of the way through the beer odyssey, and one step closer to having drank our way back home. It's been a good 20% of the Journey. We Started out with some great trappistes ales in Belgium, then headed to Holland for some big name beers, and on to Denmark for some rotgut. Now we are about to leave Germany and it's plethera of beers. Here is the updated Beer Map to help you track our progress.
